3 Tips for Maintaining Open Communication Between Parents and Nannies
- Establish Clear Expectations
Part of your family consultation with your Twinkle Toes rep is to discuss your family’s expectations for the perfect nanny. We’ll discuss things like family values, routines, and specific needs before the nanny matching process starts. However, these things can change as the child gets older or as family dynamics change. Be sure to communicate this clearly with your nanny so they can be as helpful as possible. If you use us for more babysitting or one-off care, consider creating a simple one page sheet outlining schedules, rules, and values to minimize misunderstandings.
- Schedule Regular Check-Ins
Implementing daily feedback between the nanny and family can ensure a smooth handover at the end of the nanny’s shift. This is the perfect time to discuss how feedings, naps, diapers, mood, etc. were throughout the
day. This can be discussed verbally, or the nanny can keep a notebook with these details to share with parents.
We also strongly encourage families to have at a minimum, a sit down 30, 60, and 90 days after the nanny starts to discuss what is going well and what could use improvement. This should be a very open and honest conversation both ways between parents and the nanny to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
- Foster Trust and Respect
Aside from the regular check ins, parents should encourage open feedback both ways between parents and the nanny, and parents should acknowledge the nanny's efforts. A culture of respect contributes to better communication and a positive working relationship.
By following these tips, parents and nannies can create a nurturing environment for the children they care for.
